What I absolutely love is how much the film trusts its supporting characters. Tom Cruise doesn’t have to carry the entire runtime on charm alone. Dorothy’s sister Laurel is a fully realized person with her own frustrations, her own wit, her own arc. Rod Tidwell’s marriage is more textured and emotionally honest than most films’ central relationships. Of course I have to mention the young Ray Boyd who is adorable and provides the emotional weight, grounding the film’s romance in a messy reality. Everyone on screen has a soul, a history you can sense without being told. That kind of quiet, distributed humanity is almost impossible to find today, and watching Jerry Maguire, you feel its absence everywhere else.

And yes, Tom Cruise. There is simply no one like him. Magnetic doesn’t even cover it. He is a different breed of movie star altogether, one that the industry spent decades producing and may never reproduce again. Every beat feels earned.

The film also moves slowly by today’s standards, and that slowness can be such a gift. Things breathe. Scenes are allowed to linger past their narrative utility because the film understands that emotion needs room to settle. It doesn’t panic and cut away. It lets you sit with people. I have missed that feeling.

That is exactly what modern filmmaking has largely abandoned. There’s a particular kind of film being made right now, engineered for half of our attention. Films designed to play in the background while you scroll, constructed with enough noise and momentum to register passively but not demanding enough to require genuine presence. You know the ones. They are sometimes technically competent, frequently expensive, but almost completely forgettable the moment they end.

Jerry Maguire is the opposite. Almost every scene pulls you away from whatever else you were doing and plants you there. The performances are authentic. The emotions are specific. The small moments, a look, a pause, a conversation happening in a car, carry as much weight as anything louder.

There are certain sequences that lean a little too hard into the era’s sentimentality but you know what, I don’t look at them as imperfections. I have thoroughly missed that. The imperfections are human ones, which makes them forgivable. This is a film that was clearly made by people who cared, for audiences expected to care back.

That social contract between filmmaker and viewer has quietly dissolved somewhere along the way. Jerry Maguire is a reminder of what it felt like when it was still intact. A rom-com that is cynical about the world but stubbornly optimistic about people.

I simply couldn’t stop comparing it to Uncut Gems, which remains a far superior film in terms of structure and natural progression. While Marty Supreme has even more subplots or bigger scale than Gems, the development didn’t feel nearly as organic.

That said, the filmmaking itself is undeniable. It is shot in an incredible way that we simply don't see anymore. We often talk about wanting real, grounded stories that feel lived-in rather than grand "theme-park" spectacles, and this is it. Making a period film feel this tangible is extremely difficult, and it succeeds as a frantic, claustrophobic visual ride with an amazing score. The performances are absolutely stunning across the board, especially Kevin "Mr. Wonderful" O'Leary in his acting debut.

However, despite a phenomenal turn by Chalamet, I felt let down by the script. The story seemed carefully constructed for the Oscar appeal rather than for natural narrative flow. The ending, while beautiful, felt abrupt and unearned. The film simply didn’t do the emotional legwork to justify that final sequence.

If Uncut Gems had received this level of hype and the icon status Chalamet currently enjoys, Adam Sandler would have won an Oscar, and deservingly so. Marty Supreme just isn’t as well-rounded or tight.

An enjoyable ride nonetheless. I will always look forward to anything the Safdie universe produces.

Fortunately, a few beautifully crafted motifs stand out, and it’s hard to deny the beauty of its conclusion. And what a conclusion it was. I’ve long been fascinated by how common folk must have reacted to one of the greatest storytellers of all time, and I yearn to see Shakespearean settings come to life on screen. The final act delivered exactly this: the profound democracy of stories, how they affect us all regardless of class or gender. When Jessie Buckley’s Agnes sees that she is not alone in her grief, that a story can reach across and hold the people who witness it, the effect is magnificent. This last act is what salvaged the film for me.

Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight” continues to torment me in a hauntingly beautiful way, as it has over the years. And Jessie Buckley, the woman that you are! She carried the entire film with her performance.

The film is adapted from Maggie O'Farrell's novel, and I believe this piece of literature matters deeply. Scholars, academics, and historians have treated Agnes (Anne) Hathaway rather horribly over the centuries: she was a peasant, Shakespeare hated her, he fled to London to escape her. Yet there is no evidence for any of this. There is, in fact, evidence that he loved her. A lot. I admire this aspect of the work most of all. Filling the historical gap, restoring dignity to a woman long maligned, and recognizing the quiet urgency of telling her story.

My letterboxd

The film emerges from the real friendship between Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, who co-wrote the screenplay based on their actual conversations. Shawn plays a version of himself: a struggling playwright and actor trudging through the mundane rhythms of New York life, reluctantly meeting his old friend Andre (Gregory) for dinner. What unfolds is a philosophical dialogue, a meeting of two worldviews that couldn’t be more different yet somehow illuminate each other perfectly.

Andre has spent years pursuing transcendent experiences: experimental theater in Poland, spiritual quests in the Sahara, encounters with mysterious monks in Tibet. He speaks with the fervor of someone who has touched something beyond ordinary existence, yet there’s an underlying desperation in his searching. Wallace, meanwhile, represents the comfortable numbness of routine: his morning coffee, his girlfriend Debby, his small apartment with its electric blanket. He’s suspicious of Andre’s grand adventures, defensive about his own modest contentments. I should also mention how there’s an entire philosophical argument that happens around an electric blanket.

Andre’s criticism of modern life’s spiritual emptiness rings true, but his solutions often sound privileged and self-indulgent. Wallace’s defense of simple pleasures has genuine wisdom, but it also masks a fear of genuine engagement with life’s larger questions. The film doesn’t resolve their differences so much as reveal them as complementary ways of being human.

The culture clash between Andre’s spiritual seeking and Wallace’s bourgeois pragmatism generates genuine humor. But it’s also deeply serious about questions that most films avoid: What does it mean to be alive rather than merely existing? How do we maintain authenticity in a world that seems designed to numb us? Can friendship survive fundamental differences in how we choose to live?

What I absolutely loved is how it validates both perspectives. No one is right or wrong. It shows how an honest conversation between people who care about each other can bridge even the most profound differences in worldview.

Andre’s Final Monologue

Andre’s closing monologue about sex, relationships, and the terror of uncertainty represents the philosophical and emotional heart of the entire film. After hours of mystical stories and theatrical adventures, Andre finally arrives at the most intimate and universal truth: our desperate need for certainty in the face of life’s fundamental unpredictability.

Here’s the ending monologue:

Roma is a black and white art film which is also a highly personal project by Alfonso Cuarón that features the perspective of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a domestic servant working for a middle-class family – a character based on the Cuarón's family servant, Lobi.

Cuarón has done a incredible job taking his childhood and adapting it for the big screen. He also stated that ninety percent of the scenes represented in the film are the scenes taken out of his memory.

Personal narratives like Roma serve as antidotes to the creativity crisis we’ve identified in modern cinema. Cuarón reminds us why we need stories that illuminate overlooked perspectives and forgotten voices. As audiences, we bear responsibility for defending cinema's capacity for genuine human connection. Every time we choose to watch, discuss, and champion films like Roma, we're voting for the kind of filmmaking that treats viewers as thinking, feeling human beings rather than consumption data points.

Cuarón went on to win the Golden Lion at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival. Yalitza Aparicio became the first indigenous woman from the Americas (and only the second Mexican woman) to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role.

In this 30-minute film, Truffaut delves into the delicate emotions of adolescence, portraying Antoine’s awkward yet tender pursuit of romance with a young woman named Colette. The film showcases Truffaut’s hallmark style—naturalistic dialogue, a keen eye for human emotion, and a deep understanding of character development.

There is no grand plot here; instead, the narrative is driven by the small but meaningful interactions between Antoine and Colette. The cinematography is simple and effective, focusing on the intimate details of Antoine’s life in Paris. While it may be a short film, its emotional depth and authenticity is great and makes it a must-watch for fans of French New Wave cinema.

1. Rear Window (1954)

   

Rear Window sits atop my personal pantheon because it's Hitchcock's most technically ambitious film. Stewart's L.B. Jefferies, confined to his wheelchair with a broken leg, becomes the perfect surrogate for every moviegoer who's ever sat in the dark, watching other people's lives unfold through a rectangular frame. I remember the first time I watched it, how Hitchcock gradually transformed my innocent curiosity into something more sinister, more shameful. There's that moment when Grace Kelly is searching through Thorwald's apartment and we can only watch from across the courtyard, powerless to intervene. Suddenly you realize Hitchcock has caught us red-handed. We're not innocent viewers anymore. We're voyeurs, and we're loving every second of it. Hitchcock understood that cinema is inherently voyeuristic, but rather than shy away from this uncomfortable truth, he builds an entire narrative architecture around it.

2. Rope (1948)

   

If Rear Window is Hitchcock's meditation on cinema itself, then Rope represents his most audacious formal experiment: an attempt to film murder as performance art. The film's famous "single take" construction (actually several long takes stitched together) creates an almost unbearable sense of real time unfolding, as if we're trapped at this dinner party with two killers who think they've committed the perfect crime. There's something super unsettling about how Hitchcock makes us privy to Brandon and Phillip's secret, forcing us to watch James Stewart's Rupert Cadell slowly piece together what we already know. Rope functions as both a thriller and a critique of intellectual arrogance. Brandon's Nietzschean philosophy (his belief that superior men are above conventional morality) becomes increasingly hollow as the evening progresses. Hitchcock exposes the fundamental emptiness of such thinking, showing how quickly intellectual superiority curdles into murderous narcissism when disconnected from basic human empathy.

3. Psycho (1960)

   

Psycho remains the film that most violently shattered audience expectations, and decades later, it still feels transgressive. The shower sequence is still one of cinema's greatest set pieces; it's a masterclass in how editing, sound design, and performance can create terror from the mundane act of bathing. But what continues to fascinate and unsettle me about Psycho is how Hitchcock makes us sympathize with Norman Bates, even after we discover what he's done to his mother and to God knows how many other unsuspecting guests. Hitchcock understood that the most frightening killers aren't the ones who seem obviously dangerous, but those who could be living next door, running the local motel, offering you tea and sandwiches before stabbing you to death.

4. Vertigo (1958)

   

Vertigo might be Hitchcock's most psychologically complex film, a meditation on obsession and identity. Jimmy Stewart's Scottie Ferguson represents masculinity at its most toxic — a man so consumed with reshaping a woman to match his ideal that he literally drives her to destruction. The film's famous dolly-zoom shots represent Scottie's acrophobia and they help us visualize the dizzying descent into romantic obsession, where love becomes indistinguishable from psychological manipulation. It’s Hitchcock's dark exploration of how men project their fantasies onto women, treating them as raw material to be sculpted rather than human beings to be known.

5. Strangers on a Train (1951)

   

Strangers on a Train takes the concept of the "perfect murder" and runs it through Hitchcock's moral universe, where seemingly casual encounters can unleash devastating consequences. The film's central premise: two strangers agreeing to swap murders, taps into a fundamental fear about how thin the line between civilization and chaos really is. Robert Walker's Bruno Anthony remains one of cinema's most chilling villains because his logic is so seductive, and his charm so genuine.

6. The Birds (1963)

   

The Birds stands apart in Hitchcock's filmography as his most apocalyptic vision, a film where the threat is nature itself turning against us. There's no explanation offered for why the birds attack, no resolution that restores the natural order. This absence of closure makes the film more disturbing than any of Hitchcock's more psychologically explicit thrillers. Hitchcock wanted us to feel the same helplessness as his characters, confronting a threat that couldn't be reasoned with, manipulated, or outsmarted.

7. Dial M for Murder (1954)

   

Dial M for Murder rounds out my personal seven as Hitchcock's most theatrical film, a chamber piece that proves his mastery wasn't dependent on elaborate set pieces or exotic locations. The film's single-location setting, mostly confined to a London flat transforms what could have been a simple stage adaptation into something cinematically vital through Hitchcock's understanding of space, blocking, and the psychology of performance.

Hitchcock's best films remind us that watching movies can be a morally complicated act, one that reveals as much about us as the characters on screen.

My heart aches at the thought of what we are about to lose (or have already lost). Not just the films, but the very possibility of them. When Martin Scorsese gathered Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci for The Irishman, it felt like witnessing the final performance of a dying breed. These weren't just actors. They were cinema itself, made flesh, giving us one last dance before the curtain falls.

What made Heat transcendent was obviously the technical expertise of Michael Mann, the brilliant action set pieces, the story and so on but it was also the magnetic screen presence that both Pacino and De Niro commanded. They belonged to an era when actors were forces of nature who could bend entire scenes to their will through sheer charisma. Michael Mann understood this, crafting his crime epic around the electricity that crackled between these two legends.

The Irishman proved this magic still existed, even in their later years. The film marked "the ninth collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro" and brought together actors who had spent decades defining what cinematic greatness looked like. But it also felt like an elegy, a recognition that such collaborations between director and actor, built over decades of shared artistic vision are becoming rare or rather quite extinct.

The Fabelmans offered a different but equally authentic moment. Spielberg's semi-autobiographical masterpiece featured Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, and Paul Dano in a deeply personal story about the power of cinema itself. It reminded us why we fell in love with movies in the first place, even as it acknowledged that such intimate, director-driven storytelling faces an uncertain future.

Contemporary cinema suffers from what critics call the creativity crisis: an industry obsession with "safe storytelling" that prioritizes franchise-building over genuine human connection. Where once we had the unpredictable intensity of a Pacino performance or the methodical precision of De Niro's character work, today's films often feel "manufactured" rather than inspired.

The problem is about the entire ecosystem that once nurtured these kind of collaborations. Modern movies simply "don't feel like movies anymore" because they're created in a system that values algorithmic predictability over the kind of risk-taking that produced these gems. As one critic noted, contemporary films often feel "weightless" and "trivial," lacking the conviction that made classic cinema feel essential.

Today's actors seem different because they face different challenges. They're often typecast into franchise roles or subjected to the "same faces over and over again" phenomenon that makes it difficult to disappear into characters. The industry's focus on "content" over artistry has created a generation of performers who may be technically skilled but lack the indefinable magnetism that made their predecessors legends.

Perhaps most heartbreaking is the disappearance of the long-term creative partnerships that defined great cinema. Scorsese and De Niro's collaboration spanned decades, allowing them to develop a shared artistic language that produced masterpieces like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino. These relationships took time to mature, requiring the kind of artistic patience that today's industry rarely permits.

Is cinema dead? Or just hiding? Independent filmmakers still pursue the kind of authentic storytelling that once defined Hollywood. Streaming platforms do occasionally produce works of genuine artistry, even if they're buried beneath algorithmic recommendations. The hunger for real movies persists, even if the industry struggles to satisfy it. Just as the golden age of Hollywood eventually gave way to the New Hollywood of the 1970s, I hope our current moment of transition may eventually produce its own masters. The question is whether we'll recognize them when they arrive.

The magic of The Irishman, Heat, and The Fabelmans lies in their reminder of what cinema can be when it's created with genuine passion and artistic conviction. They stand as absolute monuments to a particular kind of filmmaking: one that prioritized character over spectacle, story over formula, and human truth over market research.

We may never again see the specific combination of talent that produced these films, but the impulse that created them, the desire to tell stories that matter, to capture something profound about the human experience remains eternal. That's the real legacy of these masters or the movie brats: their demonstration that cinema, at its best, is an art form capable of touching the deepest parts of our souls.

The heart may cry for what we've lost, but it should also celebrate what we've been given. These films exist. They can be watched, rewatched, studied, and loved.

Artistic Integrity vs. Commercial Success

Barton's central dilemma comes up when he's assigned to write a B wrestling picture, exactly the kind of formulaic entertainment he despises. Yet instead of embracing this compromise or walking away, he tries to have it both ways, attempting to inject his wrestling script with social justice themes that nobody asked for. The result is predictable: his script is rejected as "overly grave and sentimental."

This dynamic speaks to a universal human tendency: we often find ourselves in situations we've chosen but don't want to be in, then make them worse by refusing to fully commit or gracefully exit. Barton's inability to sell out completely or maintain his artistic integrity creates a psychological limbo that becomes his prison.

Self-Sabotage: Failing on Your Own Terms

Barton's most insidious form of self-sabotage is his tendency to fail on his own terms rather than risk succeeding on someone else's. When given the wrestling assignment, he could have simply written a straightforward B-movie script and collected his paycheck. Instead, he sabotages the project by trying to elevate it beyond what anyone wanted or expected. Not quite the artistic integrity, but fear disguised as principle.

How many of us have turned in work we knew wasn't quite right, telling ourselves we're maintaining our standards while secretly ensuring we won't have to face the vulnerability of genuine effort? Barton's pretentious wrestling script allows him to fail while preserving his identity as someone too good for Hollywood. It's a classic defense mechanism: if you don't really try, then failure doesn't count as a reflection of your true abilities.

The Isolation of False Superiority

Perhaps most damning is Barton's relationship with Charlie Meadows (John Goodman), his insurance salesman neighbor. Barton constantly pontificates about writing for "the common man," yet when presented with an actual working-class person, he completely fails to connect. During their conversations, Barton barely listens to Charlie's stories, instead waiting for his turn to lecture about the struggles of ordinary people, struggles he clearly doesn't understand.

When Charlie offers genuine friendship and even tries to help Barton with his writing, Barton retreats into intellectual isolation, convincing himself that his alienation is evidence of his superiority. We can often see this pattern in our own lives when we avoid feedback, skip networking events, or refuse to ask for help because we're afraid of appearing incompetent.

The Imposter Syndrome

Barton's constant anxiety about being discovered as a fraud in seen through every interaction. His nervous energy, his inability to sit still, his compulsive need to explain himself, these all stem from a deep-seated fear that he doesn't belong in the world he has entered. The Coen brothers show us how impostor syndrome becomes a prison. Barton can't enjoy his achievements because he's convinced they're undeserved, and he can't pursue new opportunities because he's terrified of being exposed.

This creates a psychological paralysis where any action feels dangerous: success proves you're a fraud who got lucky, and failure proves you're a fraud who deserves it. The irony is that his Broadway success was real, but his inability to accept that achievement makes him vulnerable to the very inadequacy he fears.

The Hotel Room as Mental Prison

The film's most powerful metaphor for self-sabotage is Barton's hotel room at the decrepit Hotel Earle. As his writer's block intensifies, the room becomes increasingly claustrophobic, with wallpaper that seems to sweat and peel like diseased skin. Barton literally cannot write: he sits at his typewriter, paralyzed, surrounded by the physical manifestation of his psychological state.

The Comfort of Familiar Failure

Perhaps most unsettling is how Barton seems almost relieved when his worst fears are realized. The chaos of the film's climax, while terrifying, also releases him from the pressure of having to succeed. There's a perverse comfort in familiar failure, it confirms our worst beliefs about ourselves while absolving us of the responsibility to try harder.

This pattern appears in our own lives when we procrastinate on important projects, sabotage promising relationships, or quit just before achieving breakthroughs. Sometimes failing in a way that confirms our existing self-concept feels safer than succeeding in a way that would require us to update our identity.

The Beach

The film's mysterious ending drives home the psychological destruction Barton has wrought upon himself. He wanders onto a beach, carrying a mysterious box (possibly containing a woman's severed head), and meets a woman who resembles a painting from his hotel room. When she asks about the box's contents, he can only respond, "I don't know."

This bizarre moment represents the endpoint of a mind that has turned so far inward that it can no longer distinguish between fantasy and reality. Barton has become so disconnected from the world around him that he exists in a state of perpetual confusion, unable to understand even his own actions.

Conclusion

What makes Barton Fink so psychologically acute is how it shows us that our fears of inadequacy often create the very conditions we're trying to avoid. Barton's terror of being revealed as a fraud makes him act fraudulently. His fear of failure makes him fail.

Barton Fink forces us to confront an uncomfortable truth: sometimes the greatest barrier to our success is just our own deep-seated conviction that we don't deserve to succeed. Until we're willing to examine these fears honestly, we'll continue to create the very failures we're trying to avoid, trapped in a psychological hotel room of our own making.

Amour is an unflinching examination of the end-of-life challenges. The film tells the story of Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), an elderly couple whose lives are forever altered when Anne suffers a stroke that paralyzes one side of her body. The film takes place almost entirely within their Paris apartment, a setting that mirrors the claustrophobic and inescapable nature of their situation.

Haneke’s direction is precise and restrained, opting for long takes that allow us to fully immerse ourselves in the couple’s world. There’s a sense of realism that makes the film so devastating and it forces us to confront the brevity of time and the inevitable frailty of the human condition.

Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva deliver heart-wrenching performances that are authentic and breathtaking. The film is not just a story of illness but also a meditation on the dignity (and the lack of it), that comes with aging. It raises difficult questions about autonomy, suffering, and the limits of compassion.

Amour is not an easy watch, and it certainly won’t appeal to everyone. Haneke has crafted a film that challenges us to consider what it truly means to love someone until the very end. Having won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, it later went on to win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The moment comes near the film's climax. Gawain, played by Dev Patel, has completed his year-long journey to meet the Green Knight at the Green Chapel. He's about to fulfill his end of a bargain that will likely cost him his life. As the massive, tree-like Green Knight raises his axe above Gawain's neck, the young man asks with genuine bewilderment: “Is this really all there is?” The Green Knight pauses, seemingly confused by the question, and responds simply: “What else ought there be?”

To understand why this exchange happens, you need to know what Gawain expected versus what he found. The film follows the basic structure of the 14th-century Arthurian poem, but Lowery's version presents Gawain as an immature, lazy young man desperate to prove himself worthy of his place among the Knights of the Round Table. When the mysterious Green Knight arrives at Camelot offering his deadly “Christmas Game,” Gawain seizes the chance to win glory by beheading the supernatural visitor. Of course, the Green Knight simply picks up his severed head and reminds Gawain of their appointment one year hence.

Gawain spends that year believing his arduous quest will somehow culminate in something grander than a simple execution. He expects meaning, revelation, or at least some cosmic significance to justify his suffering. Instead, he finds exactly what was promised: a being ready to return the blow he dealt. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is where the dialogue gains its power. Gawain's question reveals his fundamental misunderstanding about what life owes us. The Green Knight's response, genuinely puzzled, suggests that our expectations of meaning beyond immediate reality might themselves be the source of our suffering.

When Gawain asks “Is this really all there is?” he's expressing what the philosopher Albert Camus might recognize as the absurd, the conflict between human desire for meaning and the universe's apparent indifference. The Green Knight's response represents a different kind of wisdom: the recognition that reality doesn't need to be more than what it is to be sufficient.

I find myself returning to this dialogue during those moments when life feels disappointing or insufficient. When a relationship ends without dramatic closure, when a project fails without lessons learned, when days pass in mundane routine rather than meaningful adventure. The question Is this really all there is? often carries an undertone of complaint, as if existence has failed to meet some unspecified standard we’ve set for ourselves.

But the Green Knight's counter-question reframes everything. What else ought there be? The question isn't dismissive, it's genuinely curious. It suggests that our dissatisfaction might stem from expectations we've never examined. Maybe the ordinariness of most experience isn't a failing of reality but simply its nature.

This is in no way about lowering expectations or accepting less than we deserve. Absolutely not! It's about recognizing that the gap between what is and what we think should be often causes more suffering than our actual circumstances. The Green Knight offers no false comfort or promise of hidden meaning. He simply suggests that what exists might already be enough.

There's something deeply relieving about this perspective. It means I don't have to constantly search for the deeper significance in everyday disappointments or setbacks. Sometimes things are exactly as simple as they appear. Sometimes there is no hidden lesson, no character growth, no silver lining. Sometimes life is just life, and that's sufficient.

This should help us release the exhausting need for everything to mean something beyond itself. It means finding peace in the reality that most of existence is pretty damn ordinary and that it doesn't represent a failure of imagination or purpose.

What else ought there be? Maybe the answer is nothing. Maybe what we have is already enough.

Set in the late 1950s in a sleepy New Mexico town, the story unfolds over the course of a single night. It centers around two teenagers, switchboard operator Fay Crocker (Sierra McCormick) and local radio DJ Everett Sloan (Jake Horowitz), who stumble upon a strange audio frequency that interrupts the evening’s broadcast. As they begin investigating the source of the sound, they find themselves drawn into a mystery that suggests something otherworldly might be happening in their town.

Patterson’s direction is both ambitious and immersive. He employs long, continuous takes that glide through the town’s streets and capture the action in real-time, lending a sense of authenticity to the unfolding events.

I am always on the lookout for small movies with big ideas, executed with great skill. The Vast of Night is a remarkable example of how less can indeed be more. Its low-budget constraints become assets, creating a sense of intimacy and suspense rarely found in more lavish (or "theme-park") productions.

The film follows Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell), a young delinquent who leads a gang in a near-future Britain. His nights are filled with acts of violence, theft, and sexual assault, all set to his favorite classical music, most notably, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. McDowell’s performance is electrifying and disarming, blending charm with chilling sadism. What I find astonishing is Kubrick's meticulous attention to detail—whether in the set design, costume choices, or cinematography— he builds a world that feels alien yet alarmingly familiar.

A Clockwork Orange was notoriously controversial upon release, particularly surrounding its depiction of sexual violence. It was even banned from theatres in several countries, including the UK, where Kubrick himself requested its withdrawal after receiving death threats. Some viewers have criticized the film for glamorizing brutality, while others argue that its shocking content is essential to its critique of desensitization and moral decay. Kubrick intentionally blurred these lines, creating a work that is as much about audience complicity as it is about its characters. Over the years, it has gained a cult following and is widely regarded as one of Kubrick’s definitive masterpieces.

What sets Eden Lake apart from typical horror fare is its grounding in realism. The escalating conflict feels so disturbingly plausible, it makes the tension all the more harrowing. The performances, particularly by Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender, are raw and believable, drawing the audience into their plight.

The film's unflinching depiction of brutality and moral ambiguity forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about violence and human nature. James Watkins maintains a relentless pace, keeping the suspense taut throughout, and the film’s cinematography effectively contrasts the natural beauty of the setting with the ugliness of the events that unfold.

Thematic Foundations: Creation and Existence

Both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant explore profound questions about our origins and existence without requiring viewers to have extensive knowledge of the Alien franchise. At their core, these films examine the relationship between creators and their creations, asking what happens when created beings seek answers from their makers, only to find their creators are flawed, hostile, or absent.

In Prometheus, we follow scientists and explorers who discover ancient star maps left by various human civilizations, suggesting that an advanced alien species visited Earth and potentially created humanity. This premise explores humanity's fundamental desire to understand our origins: a universal question that transcends the specific plot details of the film. The Engineers, as they're called, represent not just alien beings but metaphorical gods who might hold answers to humanity's oldest questions.

The Creator-Creation Dynamic

Both films present a fascinating three-tiered hierarchy of creation: the Engineers created humans, and humans created synthetic life (androids). This allows the films to explore how each creation relates to its creator, often with tragic results. The Engineers appear to have planned humanity's destruction, while David (Michael Fassbender), the android created by humans, ultimately rebels against his makers. This pattern suggests a recurring cycle where creations inevitably turn against their creators.

The Engineers

In Prometheus, the Engineers are presented as a technologically advanced humanoid species physically similar to humans but larger and with distinctive pale skin. The opening scene of the film shows an Engineer sacrificing himself, his disintegrating DNA seeding a primordial planet (implied to be Earth), suggesting they were responsible for creating human life through biological engineering (rather than any divine intervention).

The Black Goo

The black substance (often called "black goo" by fans) functions as a biomechanical mutagen that transforms organisms in unpredictable ways. Ridley Scott has described it as "the newest form of biological warfare," designed to destroy all non-botanical life. Rather than simply killing organisms, it reconstructs their DNA, creating new and often horrific life forms.

David: Creation Becoming Creator

The synthetic character David, portrayed excellently by Fassbender, embodies the theme of creation surpassing its creator. In Prometheus, David serves human interests while secretly harboring ambitions of his own. By Alien: Covenant, he has evolved into a being who creates rather than serves, conducting experiments with the black substance and engineering new life forms.

In Alien: Covenant's prologue, David directly questions his creator Peter Weyland about the fundamental inequality in their relationship, asking why he must serve beings who will die while he continues to exist. This conversation establishes the trilogy's central paradox: creators make "children" they hope will be perfect, yet resent when those creations surpass them or seek independence.

Faith vs. Science

Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) represents the conflict between scientific inquiry and religious faith. Despite being a scientist, she wears a cross and maintains her faith even after discovering humanity was engineered by aliens. Her character embodies the film's suggestion that scientific answers about our origins don't necessarily address the deeper "why" questions of existence.

Both films suggest that the pursuit of knowledge without moral guidance leads to destruction. Weyland seeks the Engineers for immortality but finds death instead. The Engineers created humanity but then planned to destroy their creation. David's experiments create horrifying monsters rather than beauty. These parallel stories suggest that knowledge without wisdom or compassion becomes destructive.

The Engineers' Intent and Unresolved Mythology

One of the most intriguing questions posed by the Alien prequel films is why the Engineers wanted to kill humanity. According to Ridley Scott, this motivation stems from a complex interplay of technological advancement, loss of faith, and rebellion against creators: a thematic cycle mirrored in the relationship between humans and their android creations. Scott hinted in interviews that humanity might have been viewed as "misbehaving children" who had spiraled out of control, similar to the Roman Empire.

The "Space Jesus" theory suggests the Engineers sent an emissary to guide humanity back to a proper path, but our rejection and crucifixion of this emissary signaled to them that their creation could not be saved. While Scott's team ultimately decided this angle was too obvious, the underlying concept remained: humanity's growing technological capabilities and diminishing reverence for their creators posed a threat that the Engineers sought to eliminate before humans could challenge their existence.

These philosophical questions were meant to be further explored and potentially resolved in Ridley Scott's planned third film, tentatively titled "Alien: Awakening," which would have completed the prequel trilogy and connected more directly to the original Alien film. This final installment would have continued exploring David's experiments and potentially shown the Engineers returning to confront both David and the destruction he caused on their homeworld.

The third film would have completed the thematic exploration of creator-creation conflict that runs throughout the series while potentially answering lingering questions about the Engineers' true motives and the definitive origin of the Xenomorph species. Unfortunately, the disappointing box office performance of Alien: Covenant led to the cancellation of this project, leaving many of these profound philosophical questions unresolved.

Conclusion: The Cycle of Creation

The films suggest that creation is inherently a process filled with risk, disappointment, and rebellion. Whether it's the Engineers creating humans, humans creating synthetic life, or David creating alien monsters, each creator faces the same dilemma: their creations inevitably develop their own will and often turn against their makers.

This cycle of creation, rebellion, and destruction raises profound questions about our own existence. If we were created (whether by gods, aliens, or natural processes), what responsibility do our creators bear for our flaws? What responsibility do we bear for the technologies and artificial intelligences we create?

While Prometheus and Alien: Covenant may not have satisfied all fans of the Alien franchise, I will always love them for their ambitious philosophical exploration of creation, existence, and the search for meaning. The films managed to offer substance that is beyond any typical science fiction horror, inviting us to contemplate not just the origins of the Xenomorph, but the nature and purpose of existence itself.

Not much happens in Paterson, but that’s precisely the point. Jarmusch invites us to find significance in the small details of life. Driver’s performance is understated yet deeply engaging, bringing a quiet warmth to the role. He embodies the essence of a man content with his routine, yet who uses his creative mind to engage with the world on a deeper level. Paterson’s poetry, inspired by real-life poet William Carlos Williams, serves as the film’s thematic backbone.

Paterson is a meditative exploration of the beauty in the mundane, offering a serene antidote to the often chaotic nature of modern cinema. It’s a film that asks you to slow down, observe, and appreciate the present moment. As the industry continues to evolve, I deeply hope that filmmakers like Jarmusch and films like Paterson continue to find space to thrive, offering us a reminder that sometimes the smallest moments carry the most meaning.

There exists today a paradox in the film industry: as our technical capabilities to create visual marvels expand, the soul of cinema contracts. Studios now employ AI to analyze scripts, predicting commercial success with cold, algorithmic precision before a single frame is shot. To be honest, I cannot even wrap my head around that fact. The human element of creative risk, that beautiful uncertainty that led to such classics is being methodically engineered out of existence.

The resurrections (cash grabs) of old IPs rarely honor their source material; instead, leaving an off-putting stain on the franchises. Disney continues to remake classic and successful films rather than creating new stories for new generations. This betrays not only the original works but also the potential for contemporary creations to flourish.

With the rise of OTT platforms, the traditional movie/cinema hall industry has taken a hit. The communal experience of cinema that I grew up with in a culturally rich city like Pune, that sacred darkness I would share with strangers in small cinema halls, is being replaced by isolated viewing. Totally stripping films of their social dimension and transforming them into mere content. A massive worldwide pattern of recycling big stars and safe stories repeats over and over again.

What pains me most deeply is the disappearance of the middle ground. Those mid-budget, character-driven films that once formed the backbone of cinema are becoming increasingly rare. J.J. Abrams declared "it was of vital importance that smaller films are protected, not forgotten in lieu of 'four-quadrant mega-releases.'" Yet this middle space continues to contract.

The studios that once nurtured the visions of auteurs like Scorsese, P.T. Anderson, and their ilk now allocate resources almost exclusively to franchise exploitation, leaving little oxygen for the kind of cinema that speaks to the human condition rather than spectacle.

I really miss those mid and low-budget films of the 2000s that weren't concerned with spawning sequels or selling merchandise but with exploring what it means to be human. Films like Juno, No Country for Old Men, Requiem For A Dream, Little Miss Sunshine, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Donnie Darko, Lost in Translation, and countless other films that defined the era.

I find myself thinking of Camus' Sisyphus, condemned to roll a boulder uphill for eternity. Perhaps lovers of true cinema are similarly fated, to search increasingly barren landscapes for those rare works that still embody the art form's potential. For cinema as we knew it may be dying, but I will continue to seek out those precious works that remind me why I fell in love with this art form in the first place.

Memories of Murder is more than just a murder mystery. It is a haunting exploration of human desperation, systemic failure, and the futility of justice in an indifferent world. Released in 2003, the film is based on the real-life Hwaseong serial murders in South Korea. The film’s cinematography, by Kim Hyung-koo, is remarkable. Bong Joon-ho employs long takes and wide-angle shots to convey the isolation of the characters and the difficulty of their task, evoking an unsettling sense of dread.

Memories of Murder should be considered a landmark in crime cinema, blending elements of suspense, drama, and social commentary into a film which is emotionally resonant as well as intellectually stimulating. Bong Joon-ho’s direction is impeccable, and the performances by the cast elevate the story beyond a crime thriller. It becomes a meditation on the human condition and the limits of the justice system.

As good as Parasite is, I personally believe Memories of Murder is even better and stands as Bong Joon-ho's best film.

Cinema Paradiso is a film about the magic of cinema and one that is closest to my heart. This nostalgic coming-of-age story explores the relationship between Toto (Salvatore Cascio) and Alfredo (Philippe Noiret), the cinema projectionist in the small Sicilian town of Giancaldo in the years following World War II. The narrative unfolds in flashback from Toto's point of view, structured around three stages of his life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Directed with great heart by Giuseppe Tornatore, the story is drawn from his childhood memories and was shot in Bagheria, Sicily, his hometown. The film went on to win several awards, including the 1989 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Many people attribute this film to igniting their cinephile journey, which is true for me as well. At its core, Cinema Paradiso is about love—love for family and love for cinema. It captures what cinema meant as a collective social experience and serves as a poignant reminder of why we fell in love with it in the first place. Cinema Paradiso is one of those rare films that can genuinely be described as cathartic. While many people visit Sicily for their love of The Godfather—a trip that’s certainly on my bucket list—I also wish to visit for Cinema Paradiso. Widely considered one of the best Italian films ever made, Cinema Paradiso features incredible performances by Philippe Noiret, Salvatore Cascio, Marco Leonardi, Jacques Perrin, and Pupella Maggio. Not to mention, the exquisite musical score by Ennio Morricone is one for the ages and will remain etched in my heart forever.

As with every piece of entertainment, Cinema Paradiso eventually comes to an end, and it does so in the most soul-stirring way possible. While finishing this review, I can’t help but ask myself: Will any film ever make me feel this way again?
